The practise of Meditation was introduced to the world in 1500 BC. The five major religions – Hinduism, Buddhism , Judaism , Christianity and Islam are the ones who have been meditating from long ago. In western cultures, the art of Meditation was instigated in the 18th century. Recently, it’s been affirmed that around 15% of the population worldwide , meditates. With the additional benefits,the figure is most likely to increase as everyday someone is either chanting ‘OM’ or watching content for spiritual growth.
What is Meditation?
The practice of focusing for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting,
for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation is called Meditation.
Meditation is also defined as the path of self realisation and enlightenment. It’s the pathway to experience a euphoric mind.
Western countries have classified meditation in two categories ,
Focused or Concentrative Meditation.
This type of meditation comprises paying attention to the breath or to a mantra. Visualization, mala beads or focusing at a particular point on the forehead are the elements of focused or concentrated meditation.
Monitoring or Mindfulness Meditation
This type of meditation includes mindfulness and shikantaza (Silent Illumination). Feelings , thoughts , memories , sensations are to be watched in this kind of meditation.
Why should one Meditate and what are its benefits ?
Buddha was once asked what have you gained from meditation ?
He replied, “Nothing. However let me tell you what I lost : Anger , Anxiety , Depression, Insecurity , Fear of Old age and Death.”
